I often meet parents who state ‘I wish I could have addressed this issue sooner’. Addressing any developmental concern whether it be feeding concerns, hand skills, or properly forming letters, is more easily addressed when the child is caught at a young age and treatment is sought out sooner rather than later. This helps with decreasing poorly formed habits and the struggle of having to break those habits. Even if you are not sure whether or not your child is in need of extra help, feel free to contact a therapist to get your questions answered and a professional opinion as to whether or not you should seek out therapy. Nevertheless, it is never too late to work on enhancing the functioning of a child. Occupational Therapists are very creative at assisting a child to function at their optimal level of performance. If, for example, a child is having difficulty with performing legible printing, an Occupational Therapist can assist with either correcting any poorly formed habits, or teaching the child a new writing skill such as cursive writing or typing. Goals are met and children flourish with the cohesiveness of the expertise of an Occupational Therapist and the motivation of the family and child to improve.
